How to Use a Hair Mask
The 3-Step Expert Ritual for Intense hair nutrition
The Clarins Application Method
Follow the 3-Step Expert Application Method below of Le Masque Baume - Lipo Revitalizing Mask, developed with our Clarins experts and a hair therapist.
Routine & Dose: Use once a week instead of conditioner for normal hair and after each shampoo for very dry hair. Apply 2 to 3 hazelnut-sized amount from short to long hair and leave in for 3 to 10 minutes.
Step 1: Application
-
Wash hair with Le Bain Expert Fortifying Shampoo and towel-dry.
Note: Since oil and water do not mix, waterlogged hair cannot absorb the lipids in this balm mask. The towel-drying step is essential because it created a vacuum-like action that draws in the fatty acids. - Longer hair:
- Part hair down the back and bring to the front.
- Dispense the Lipo Revitalising Hair Mask into your palm and warm up it by rubbing between your hands. Adjust amount for type, condition, and length of hair.
- Starting at the ears, massage it into each section using a light downward motion to the ends.
- Repeat 3 times to tame frizz.
- Bring all the hair to one side and run your hands down the lengths to the ends.
- Shorter hair:
- Dispense the mask onto your fingers and apply by pinching the ends all over the head. Avoid the scalp.
Step 2: Moisture Infusion
With the outer scale-like cuticles slightly ruffled by towel-drying, this infusion step ensures that the botanical lipids have time to penetrate and deliver nutrients.
- Longer hair: With hair gathered on one side, evenly distribute the product with a brush or use your fingers as a comb. (Shorter hair: Skip this extra step; the pinching motions achieved even distribution).
- Set a timer:
- Natural/lightly dry/mid-length hair: 3 minutes
- Colour-treated/highlighted/textured/very dry hair: Up to 10 minutes
Step 3: Thermal Activation and Cuticle Sealing
- Rinse with warm water
- Rinse with cool-water
- Move down the lenghts to the ends to smooth the cuticles
Common Application Issues to Avoid
- Recommendation 1: Hair is at its most vulnerable when wet, so be gentle when removing excess water with a towel. Harsh rubbing causes friction that can fray the cuticles and weaken the hair fibre.
- Recommendation 2: Applying this hydrating hair mask directly on the roots can saturate the scalp and weight it down. Remember that your scalp produces its own lipid barrier, so avoid root overload by starting at the mid-lengths and working the product to the ends.
FAQ: How to Use a Hair Mask
Achieve deep nutrition with the right application method.
What is a Hair Mask?
The overwhelming popularity of hair masks is ample proof that they can achieve amazing results. And like anyone with curly hair, fine hair and/or frizzy hair can attest to, they are a non-negotiable hair care product in addition to post-shampoo conditioner.
Hair masks are rich deep-conditioning treatments that drench hair in lasting moisture. They typically contain nourishing plant-based lipids (fatty acids) and are left on for 5-10 minutes to fully saturate each strand’s inner cortex and outer cuticles. When used on a consistent basis, the moisture infusion and cuticle sealing actions that masks provide leave hair visibly fuller, shinier, and healthier.
Should I use a hair mask before or after conditioner?
The Lipo Revitalising Hair Mask is formulated as a complement to the hair conditioner you use after shampooing. Much like a face mask, it is used after cleansing to infuse your hair with deep, lasting moisture and nutrients.
Can I leave a hair mask on overnight?
Some hair masks can be left on while you sleep, but more is not always better with Clarins’ balm-like hair mask for dry to very dry hair. When applied and activated using our exclusive method, you can achieve best results in as few as 3 minutes and a maximum of 10 minutes.
How often should I use a hair mask?
The reap the benefits of a hair mask, apply it once a week instead of your regular post-shampoo conditioner. For extremely dry or brittle hair, we recommend replacing your conditioner with the Clarins Lipo Revitalising Hair Mask and/or mixing it with L’Elixir Multi-Care Luminous Hair Oil for an extra moisture infusion.
Do I apply a hair mask to wet or dry hair?
Most masks, including the Lipo Revitalising Hair Mask, are most effective when applied to damp towel-dried hair. This is when the hair fibre is at the right porosity to absorb the nutrients and lipids that a mask provides.
Can I use a hair mask on my scalp?
It is best not to apply a hair mask with plant-based lipids on your scalp since it produces its own natural oils. Explore the other Clarins Hair Therapy products specifically designed for scalp care, such as Le Serum Fortifying Scalp Concentrate.
How much product is required for a single hair mask treatment?
The ultimate goal is to saturate every strand, so adjust the amount of hair mask you use to accommodate the type, condition, and length of your hair. This typically ranges from 2 to 3 hazelnut-sized amount for shorter to longer hair.
